Origin of geochemical mantle components: Role of spreading ridges and thermal evolution of mantle Editors’ Highlight-This paper explores the evolution of the terrestrial mantle from the Archean until the present day, specifically element redistribution at mid-ocean ridges (MOR). The authors evaluate the role of decompression melting of the mantle using a numerical model. Comparison of the model and observed isotopic compositions of depleted basalts allows a new understanding of the timing and conditions of melting that formed depleted MOR basalt-type source mantle. This paper has raised the bar over previous isotope evolution models owing to its coupling with petrological decompression melting models.
